The Rara Lake Trek takes you deep into the remote northwest of Nepal, far from busy trekking corridors and modern noise. Centered around Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal, this journey offers a rare mix of high-altitude wilderness, quiet villages, and dramatic landscapes shaped by isolation and time. Located inside Rara National Park, the region remains one of the least explored trekking areas in the country.
The trek begins with a flight or overland journey from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a short mountain flight to Jumla. From Jumla, the trail unfolds through open alpine meadows, forested ridges, and traditional settlements such as Chere Chaur, Sinja Valley, and Ghorosingha. These villages reflect the old Khasa culture of western Nepal, where life still follows seasonal rhythms.
The highlight of the trek is reaching Rara Lake at 2,990 meters, a vast turquoise body of water surrounded by pine forests and snow-covered ridges. The lake changes color throughout the day, from deep blue in the morning to emerald green under afternoon light. A full exploration day allows time to walk along the shoreline, hike to surrounding viewpoints, and experience the calm that defines this region.
This trek is ideal for travelers seeking solitude, natural beauty, and cultural depth rather than crowded trails. With moderate elevations and gradual ascents, it is suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness.
