Description

Putha Himchuli (7,246m), located in the remote Dolpo region of Nepal, is a prominent peak in the Dhaulagiri range. This expedition offers a thrilling yet achievable climb for mountaineers seeking high-altitude adventure with relatively less technical difficulty.

The journey to Putha Himchuli involves a scenic flight to Juphal, followed by a trek through remote villages, high-altitude pastures, and stunning Himalayan landscapes. The route passes through culturally rich settlements, offering insight into the traditions of the Dolpo region. The climb itself consists of steep snow slopes and glacier travel, requiring experience in high-altitude trekking and basic mountaineering skills.

The expedition is ideal for those looking to summit a 7,000m peak with a more exploratory approach, as Putha Himchuli sees fewer climbers compared to other major peaks in Nepal. With proper acclimatization, technical guidance, and the support of experienced Sherpas, this adventure presents an excellent opportunity to challenge oneself in the breathtaking Nepalese Himalayas.

Itineraries

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by a representative and transferred to your hotel. After some rest, you will meet the expedition team for an introduction and receive a detailed briefing about the expedition and logistics. This is your chance to ask questions, review gear, and begin your Himalayan journey. Overnight at the hotel.

Spend the day completing essential formalities such as climbing permit processing and checking personal gear. Your guide and support crew will go over the route, emergency protocols, and equipment checklist. If time allows, explore nearby markets or historical sites in the Kathmandu Valley. All final packing is completed today. Overnight at the hotel.

Take a 40-minute domestic flight to Nepalgunj, located near the Indian border in western Nepal. The contrast in altitude and temperature is immediately noticeable. Upon arrival, transfer to a nearby guesthouse or hotel where you can relax in the warm Terai plains. Overnight in Nepalgunj.

This morning, take a short but thrilling mountain flight to Juphal, a small airstrip in the Dolpo region. From here, begin your trek with a gentle descent and a scenic three-hour walk through terraced hills and pine forests along the Bheri River to reach Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpa District. Overnight in a lodge.

Set out early and follow the river trail alongside the Bheri River. The path winds through cultivated fields, suspension bridges, and colorful villages, offering a glimpse of life in the remote Himalayas. After six hours of trekking, you reach Tarakot, an ancient fortress village with Tibetan influence. Overnight in a lodge.

Today’s trail continues through steep river gorges and pine-covered ridges. Trek for about six hours, following the trail that gradually climbs along the riverbank, leading into more remote landscapes. Arrive at Musikhola and set up your first tented camp beside the river. Overnight in a tent.

The trail ascends steadily through narrow valleys and traditional Magar settlements. Trekking for five to six hours brings you to Kagkot, the last major village before heading into complete wilderness. The village is surrounded by impressive cliffs and distant snow-capped peaks. Overnight in a tent.

Climb gradually through alpine meadows, passing grazing yaks and high-altitude flora. After five to six hours of trekking through increasingly rugged terrain, you arrive at Yak Kharka, a seasonal pastureland used by local herders. The high altitude and isolation become more prominent. Overnight in a tent.

Continue deeper into the mountains as the trail becomes steeper and colder. Trek for six hours across rocky terrain and narrow ridges to reach Putha Phedi, the foot of Putha Hiunchuli. This is a remote and wild campsite at the edge of the glaciated world. Overnight in a tent.

Begin your ascent toward Base Camp with a six to seven hour hike through moraines, scree fields, and snow-covered paths. The terrain becomes more demanding, but the views of Putha Hiunchuli’s south face are spectacular. Upon arrival, the team will set up a fully equipped expedition base camp. Overnight in a tent.

This 13-day period is dedicated to climbing Putha Hiunchuli. Begin with rotations to Camp I (5,400m) and Camp II (6,200m), carrying supplies and acclimatizing. The climb includes traversing glaciers, steep snow slopes, and exposed ridgelines. Summit attempts will depend on weather and team readiness. Each stage requires careful rope work and teamwork. Nights are spent in high-altitude tented camps.

After final cleanup at Base Camp, descend through familiar alpine terrain to Yak Kharka. The five to six hour trek offers a much-needed change in altitude and a psychological transition back to the lower world. The camp will be set up near yak pastures once again. Overnight in a tent.

Retrace your steps back down the valley, trekking for five to six hours to reach Kagkot. The return to human habitation after the solitude of the climb is both comforting and rewarding. You’ll be warmly welcomed by local villagers. Overnight in a tent.

Descend further through lush valleys and pine forests. The trail continues for about six to seven hours through some of the most scenic and culturally rich landscapes in the region. Camp is set at Laisicap near the river. Overnight in a tent.

Continue your descent back toward the lower Dolpo region. Today’s six to seven hour walk takes you through familiar gorges, cliff-side trails, and riverside camps. Reach Musikhola in the afternoon and set up camp in the same site used earlier. Overnight in a tent.

Enjoy the last leg of the major trekking route as you walk three to four hours along the Bheri River. Arrive in Dunai by early afternoon, giving you time to relax and reconnect with other groups or locals. Celebrate the successful expedition with your crew. Overnight in a lodge.

Take a short three-hour uphill trek from Dunai to the airstrip at Juphal. The trail climbs steadily through forested hills and cultivated fields, offering final views of the lower Dolpo region. Arrive in Juphal in time to prepare for the flight back. Overnight in a lodge.

Take an early morning mountain flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj, and after a brief layover, board your connecting flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax and enjoy urban comforts. Overnight at the hotel.

Use this free day to explore the cultural richness of Kathmandu. Visit ancient sites such as Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, or the Durbar Squares, or simply enjoy rest at the hotel. In the evening, join the expedition team for a farewell dinner featuring traditional Nepali food and music. Overnight at the hotel.

Your expedition concludes today. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for a final stroll or a relaxing breakfast. A team representative will escort you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure. You leave Nepal with unforgettable memories of Dolpo and the great Putha Hiunchuli.
