Description

Manakamana temple is located in the Gorkha district of Nepal. It lies 140 km away from the Kathmandu valley on the highway of Pokhara. The meaning of Manakamana is wished to fulfill. It is believed that Manakamana Devi is the incarnation of Parvati as Goddess Bhagwati.  Temple is located meters at an elevation of 1,302 meters above the river valleys of Trishuli in the south and Marshyangdi in the west. Not only that, from the Manakamana, you can see the beautiful views of different mountains like Manaslu, Himchuli, Annapurna range.

The legend of the Manakamana Goddess starts back from the Gorkha king Ram Shah during the 17th century. It is said that at that time his queen possessed divine powers, which only her devotee Lakhan Thapa knew about. And one day, the king witnessed his queen in Goddess incarnation and Lakhan Thapa in the form of a lion. When king explaining the revelation to his queen, a mysterious death befell the king and as per the custom of that time, the queen committed SATI (ritual immolation) on her husband’s funeral pyre. Before her SATI the queen had ensured Lakhan Thapa that she would reappear in the near future. Six months later, a farmer while farming his fields cleaved a stone. And from that stone, he saw a stream of blood and milk flow. When Lakhan Thapa heard about this event, he immediately performs the Hindu tantric ritual to cease blood and milk from a stone. The site became the foundation of the present shrine you will see. It is said that the priest at the temple must be a descendent of Lakhan Thapa.

There is two way to go Manakaman temple that is by Cable car or by hiking to Mankamana temple. It will take about 10 min to reach Manakamana Temple whereas it will take 4 hours hiking from the Abukhaireni.
