Himchuli Peak (6,441 m) lies in the Annapurna range and connected to Annapurna South like its own part forming a massive south-facing wall. The Himchuli was first summited by an American Peace Corps Expedition under the leadership of Craig Anderson in October 1971 via its southeast face. Himchuli Peak always offers magnificent view to the every trekker those who are visiting Annapurna Base camp. Despite the relative ease to the access of the mountain by following popular Annapurna sanctuary trekking, the mountain seems to be ignored by climbers which may be due to being prone to avalanche and exposed to rock falling. The Himchuli Peak is not technically difficult to climb but is vulnerable to rock falls, and route finding may also be a problem. However it offers major new route potentials, it has received little attention from mountaineers and is rarely climbed.
For Himchuli Peak Climbing, we follow the Annapurna sanctuary trekking trail up to Hinko and climb a very steep hillside to grassy meadows to establish the base camp to climb the peak from the normal southeast face route. Three camps are set up for the approach to the summit of Himchuli in general. The other route is north – West Face for which the base camp is set up at Annapurna South base camp near the Annapurna base camp lodges.
Climbing Route:
South-East Face Route: The route to base camp starts from Hinko Cave on the Annapurna Sanctuary trail. After establishing the first camp somewhere above the valley floor a further 2 camps are necessary to make it to the top. Although not technically extreme this route is exposed to rockfall and is a complicated route-finding experience.
North-West Face Route: The ascent by the North-West Face has been attempted only by a very few climbers and not always successfully. The exact route is not well known. The approach is from the Annapurna Base Camp in the Sanctuary and a further 2 camps may be necessary to complete this not so well known ascent.
