Description

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of Nepal’s most beloved short trekking routes, widely admired for its combination of stunning mountain scenery, rich cultural experiences, and accessible trekking challenges. Nestled in the Annapurna Conservation Area, this trek offers panoramic views of some of the most iconic Himalayan peaks, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Manaslu, and the distinctive Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) Peak.

Starting from the tranquil hill town of Bandipur and following traditional footpaths through lush forests and terraced farmland, trekkers traverse vibrant villages inhabited predominantly by the Gurung and Magar ethnic groups. These villages offer authentic insight into Nepal’s rural mountain life, with friendly locals who preserve their traditions, crafts, and hospitality.

The highlight of the trek is the early morning hike to Poon Hill, a renowned vantage point that attracts trekkers worldwide. From here, the sunrise paints the sky in fiery hues as the sun’s first rays illuminate the snow-capped giants of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, creating an unforgettable visual spectacle. This moment is a photographer’s paradise and a deeply moving experience for nature lovers.

Despite its relatively short duration and moderate altitude, the trek offers a perfect balance of adventure and comfort. The trail passes through rhododendron forests that burst into vibrant color in spring, peaceful streams, and suspension bridges. The overnight stops are in cozy tea-houses, which provide warm meals and a chance to mingle with other trekkers.

Itineraries

The journey starts with a scenic drive from Bandipur to Birethanti, the starting point of your trek. From Birethanti, you begin a short and pleasant trek to Hile, walking alongside the Burundi Khola and through small villages with terraced fields. The path is gentle and offers a good warm-up for the coming days.

Today’s trek is a steady uphill climb, primarily through thick forests and traditional stone staircases. You'll pass through Ulleri (a Magar village known for its iconic 3,000+ stone steps), and continue through rhododendron and oak forests. As you ascend, the air gets cooler, and by the time you reach Ghorepani, you'll feel the refreshing mountain breeze and get your first glimpse of distant snowy peaks.

Start early (pre-dawn) with a short hike up to Poon Hill, a famous viewpoint offering one of the best panoramic Himalayan sunrises. The golden hues on Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhre are unforgettable. After returning for breakfast in Ghorepani, trek towards Tadapani through beautiful forest trails with occasional ridge-line views. This section of trail is known for its rich biodiversity and tranquil woodland atmosphere.

Descend through forests and terraced fields to reach Ghandruk, a picturesque Gurung village. Ghandruk is culturally rich with well-preserved traditions and architecture. You can explore the Gurung Museum, observe daily village life, and enjoy magnificent views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli from your lodge.

A relatively gntle and enjoyable trek takes you from Ghandruk across stone paths and suspension bridgese. You’ll descend to the Modi Khola, then gradually climb to Landruk, another Gurung village. From there, the trail ascends gently through forests to reach Tolkha, a peaceful village perched on the hillside.

The final day begins with a descent through forested paths to Pothana and Dhampus, followed by a steeper descent to Phedi. From here, a short 30-minute drive brings you to Pokhara, where your trek concludes. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel and have time to relax by Phewa Lake, reflecting on the journey just completed.
