Description

The Annapurna Region Ski Tour is a focused five-day winter adventure designed for travelers who want to experience Himalayan backcountry skiing within a limited timeframe. Set in the lower and mid-alpine zones of the Annapurna range, this ski tour combines high mountain scenery, open snowfields, and quiet winter trails, offering a rare way to explore Nepal’s mountains beyond the traditional trekking season.

The journey begins from Pokhara, followed by a drive to the trailhead in the Annapurna foothills. From here, the route moves gradually upward through forested slopes and alpine pastures that transform into natural ski terrain during winter. These areas, normally green in trekking season, become wide snow-covered ridges and bowls ideal for ski touring and controlled descents. Daytime temperatures in the lower sections range between 5°C and 10°C, while higher elevations remain colder, averaging -5°C to 2°C.

The ski tour focuses on short ascents, scenic traverses, and moderate downhill sections rather than extreme altitude or technical lines. This makes the itinerary suitable for skiers with prior backcountry or alpine skiing experience who are comfortable moving in variable snow conditions. The route follows established mountain trails and open slopes commonly used by local herders in summer, ensuring safe navigation while maintaining a strong sense of isolation and wilderness.

Each day offers views of the Annapurna Massif, including Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre. Clear winter skies often provide sharp visibility, especially in the mornings. Overnight stays are arranged in mountain lodges or simple guesthouses where available, with camping used if conditions require. Nighttime temperatures can drop to -8°C to -12°C, particularly at higher camps, so proper winter gear is essential.

The tour concludes with a descent back toward the lower valleys and a return drive to Pokhara. Though short in duration, this ski tour delivers a genuine Himalayan winter experience, combining physical challenge, quiet landscapes, and close-up mountain views without extended exposure or long acclimatization days.
