Description

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is a legendary Himalayan journey that encapsulates the geographic, cultural, and ecological diversity of central Nepal. Spanning 19 days, this trek offers a sweeping arc around the Annapurna Massif, beginning in the lush, subtropical lowlands of Besisahar and gradually ascending into the arid, high-altitude landscapes of the Manang and Mustang regions. The route offers ever-changing scenery, ranging from terraced rice fields and dense pine forests to barren cliffs and glacier-fed rivers, while showcasing some of the most stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The diversity in terrain is matched by the variety of experiences, making each day on the trail truly unique.

One of the most exhilarating parts of the trek is the crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters), one of the highest trekking passes in the world. This demanding but rewarding ascent marks the physical and emotional high point of the journey, offering breathtaking panoramas of the Himalayas. Along the route, trekkers visit important cultural sites and highland villages such as Manang, Braga, and Marpha, where Tibetan-Buddhist traditions remain strong. The side trip to Tilicho Lake (4,919 meters), a sacred and scenic alpine lake nestled beneath towering peaks, adds an extra dimension of adventure and spiritual beauty.

Beyond its physical challenges and dramatic landscapes, the Annapurna Circuit is a deeply cultural trek, offering rich interactions with Nepal’s many ethnic communities. You’ll encounter Gurung, Thakali, and Tibetan-influenced villages, each with their own language, architecture, food, and festivals. The trek concludes with a descent into the lush Kali Gandaki Valley and a sunrise hike to Poon Hill, where golden dawn light reveals the snow-covered Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. For those seeking an immersive, all-encompassing Himalayan experience, the Annapurna Circuit Trek remains a timeless and transformative adventure.

Itineraries

Your journey starts with a scenic 9 to 10-hour bus ride from Kathmandu, winding through terraced hillsides, river valleys, and rural towns. After a long day on mountain roads, you arrive in Jagat, a small village in the Marsyangdi River Valley and the starting point of your trek.

Begin trekking alongside the Marsyangdi River for about 6 hours. You’ll cross suspension bridges, pass cascading waterfalls, climb stone staircases, and walk through lush forests. Tal is a village on a broad flat plain near a waterfall and marks the first settlement in the Manang District.

Today’s trail follows the river valley, gradually ascending through pine forests and terraced farmland. Over approximately 6 hours, you pass charming Tibetan-influenced villages such as Dharapani and Bagarchhap before arriving at Danaque, a small settlement surrounded by forests.

Trek steadily uphill through thick pine forests for about 6 hours, enjoying increasing views of snowcapped peaks like Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. Chame, the administrative center of Manang District, offers basic amenities and hot springs nearby.

Enter deeper into the Himalayas on a 6-hour trek through narrow gorges with dramatic views of Paungda Danda, a massive 1,500-meter rock face rising from the river. Upper Pisang is quieter and provides excellent mountain vistas.

Enjoy a scenic but steep 7-hour trek offering spectacular views of Annapurna II, III, and IV, as well as Gangapurna. The higher route passes through Ghyaru and Ngawal before reaching Manang, a well-developed village with bakeries, internet cafes, and a Himalayan Rescue Association clinic.

Spend the day acclimatizing with a side hike to Ice Lake, taking around 4 hours. This high-altitude trek helps your body adjust while rewarding you with stunning glaciated peaks and a pristine alpine lake. Return to Manang for lunch and rest.

Take a side trail for about 6 to 7 hours to Tilicho Base Camp. The path becomes narrower and rougher as you pass Khangsar village, eventually reaching the base camp nestled beneath steep cliffs.

Start early for a full-day 7-hour trek to Tilicho Lake, one of the world’s highest lakes, surrounded by alpine peaks such as Tilicho Peak and Nilgiri. After soaking in the views, return to base camp for the night.

Retrace part of your route and rejoin the main Annapurna Circuit trail with a 7-hour trek passing alpine meadows and yak grazing pastures. Yak Kharka offers good rest and altitude adjustment.

Prepare for a steep 6-hour ascent to Thorong High Camp, the final stop before the challenging pass crossing. The air is thin and the terrain demanding, so take it slow and rest well.

Begin before dawn to cross Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the trek. The climb and descent take about 7 hours, with breathtaking 360° mountain views. After the pass, descend to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site known for its temple with 108 water spouts.

Trek for around 7 hours through the dry, arid Mustang region, passing Kagbeni (gateway to Upper Mustang) before reaching Marpha, famous for its apple orchards and charming whitewashed houses.

Enjoy a scenic but bumpy 3 to 4-hour jeep or bus ride down to Tatopani, meaning “hot water.” Spend the afternoon relaxing in natural hot springs beside the Kali Gandaki River.

Today’s long 7 to 8-hour ascent takes you back up into rhododendron and oak forests. You’ll climb through villages like Shikha and Chitre before reaching Ghorepani, a popular trekking hub.

Wake early for a short 1 to 2-hour hike to Poon Hill for stunning panoramic sunrise views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre. Then continue trekking downhill for 5 to 6 hours through forest trails to Tadapani.

Descend for about 6 to 7 hours through dense forests and terraced fields, passing small Gurung villages such as Ghandruk or Kimche. Overnight at Syauli Bazar near the riverside.

Finish your trek with a short walk to Birethanti, where the trail ends. Then drive about 1 to 2 hours to Pokhara for lunch by the lake before catching an afternoon flight back to Kathmandu, arriving by evening.

A rest or buffer day in Kathmandu to relax or explore local UNESCO heritage sites such as Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, or Bhaktapur. Enjoy shopping in Thamel or a farewell dinner.
