Description

The Sherpani Col Cross expedition via the Makalu Base Camp is one of the most remote, technically challenging, and awe-inspiring treks in the Nepal Himalayas. Traversing the mighty valleys of the Barun and Hunku regions, this expedition provides the rare opportunity to experience the raw, untouched landscapes of the eastern Himalayas while crossing some of the highest passes accessible to trekkers: Sherpani Col (6,146m), West Col (6,143m), and Amphu Laptsa Pass (5,845m). This remote route skirts beneath the towering fifth-highest mountain in the world, Makalu (8,485m), and ultimately leads into the well-known Khumbu Valley via Chhukung and Namche Bazaar.

The trek begins in the lush Arun Valley, starting with a flight to Tumlingtar followed by an overland drive to Num. From there, the route ascends through traditional Rai and Sherpa settlements, crossing dense forests and steep ridges to the high alpine landscapes surrounding the Makalu-Barun National Park. After reaching Makalu Base Camp (4,870m), the route transitions into a full expedition approach with high-altitude camping and technical glacier crossings, requiring solid mountaineering experience and physical fitness.

This expedition is ideal for seasoned trekkers and aspiring mountaineers seeking a wild, off-the-beaten-path challenge. Offering dramatic contrasts between subtropical valleys and glacial plateaus, it includes cultural encounters with remote mountain communities, long days over rugged terrain, and some of the most dramatic mountain views in all of Nepal, including Everest, Lhotse, Baruntse, Chamlang, and Makalu.

Itineraries

After an early morning flight of about 45 minutes from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, you’ll board a jeep for a rugged off-road drive. The drive takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, passing through terraced hillsides and scattered settlements to reach the village of Num. Overnight in a tented camp.

The trail descends steeply for about 1.5 hours to the Arun River, crosses a suspension bridge, and then climbs steeply through forest and small villages. The ascent to Seduwa takes around 4.5 hours, making it a total 6-hour trek.

Camp overnight.

A relatively easier trekking day, starting with a gentle climb through cardamom farms and bamboo groves. The route ascends gradually for about 5 hours to reach the scenic Sherpa village of Tashi Gaun.

Overnight in tents.

A demanding day as you ascend steeply through dense forest. It takes around 3 hours to reach the ridge, followed by another 4 hours of uphill climbing through rhododendron forests and stone stairways to Khongma Danda.

Camp on a ridge.

Today involves crossing three high passes: Ghungru La (4,055m), Shipton La (4,127m), and Keke La (4,170m). Trekking time is approximately 7 hours, with a mix of steep ascents and descents across alpine terrain and panoramic viewpoints.

Camp overnight.

Descend for about 2 hours through forests to the Barun River, then follow a relatively flat trail along the river valley for another 5 hours. You’ll pass through yak pastures and arrive at the beautiful meadow of Yangle Kharka.

Camp by the river.

A gradual but steady ascent through open pastures and moraine fields. It takes about 4 hours to reach the intermediate grazing area of Yak Kharka, followed by 3 to 4 hours more uphill to Langmale Kharka.

Camp near a glacial stream.

Trek along the valley for about 3 hours, then ascend rocky moraine trails for another 4 hours to reach Makalu Base Camp. Set amidst massive peaks, this is one of the most scenic campsites in Nepal.

Overnight in tented camp.

Spend the day acclimatizing. Optional hike to a viewpoint above base camp (takes about 3 hours round trip) for panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu’s South Face. Rest and prepare for glacier travel ahead.

Walk on rocky moraine trails for about 6 hours, gradually ascending along the Barun Glacier. The camp at Japanese Camp is exposed and rugged, with incredible views of hanging glaciers.

Crossing loose moraine and snow-covered areas, the trek today takes about 6 to 7 hours. The trail climbs steeply in the last section, reaching the advanced base camp beneath Sherpani Col.

A long and technical alpine day begins early. It takes about 4–5 hours to reach Sherpani Col using ropes and fixed lines. From there, descend briefly and then climb to West Col, which takes another 2–3 hours. The final 3–4 hour descent leads to Baruntse Base Camp on the Hongu Glacier. Full support and rope assistance required.

Continue down the Hongu Valley glacier for about 7 to 8 hours. The terrain is a mix of flat glacier travel and rocky moraines. Camp below the Amphu Laptsa Icefall.

Start early for the steep ascent (about 3–4 hours) up the ice wall of Amphu Laptsa using fixed ropes. Descend for 6 hours on rocky and snowy trails to Chhukung. Overnight in a lodge, first teahouse after many days in tents.

Descend gradually through alpine meadows and Sherpa villages. It takes about 3 hours to reach Pangboche and another 3–4 hours to reach the monastery village of Tengboche. Overnight in the lodge.

A scenic descent through rhododendron forest with views of Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Expect about 6 to 7 hours of trekking with stops in quaint Sherpa villages along the way. Overnight at a lodge in Namche.

The final trekking day. Descend to the Dudh Koshi River and retrace your steps through Phakding. The last uphill climb to Lukla takes about 7 to 8 hours in total. Celebrate with the crew.

Morning flight back to Kathmandu (weather permitting), lasting about 40 minutes. Transfer to your hotel for a much-deserved rest.

A built-in buffer day for delays due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances. Optionally explore Kathmandu or use it as a reserve for high passes.
