This variation of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is known for its rich mix of mountain scenery, traditional villages, and natural hot springs. With highlights such as Ghandruk, Ghorepani–Poon Hill, and Tatopani, the route offers both visual rewards and cultural depth while maintaining a comfortable trekking pace.
The journey begins with a scenic 6 to 7 hour drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Nepal’s lakeside gateway to the Annapurna region. On the following day, a short drive takes you to Phedi, where the trek officially starts. The trail climbs steadily to Pothana, passing terraced fields and forested hillsides with early views of the Annapurna range.
As the trek continues, you enter the heart of the Gurung region. Ghandruk, one of the most well-known villages in the Annapurna foothills, offers a close look at traditional stone houses, narrow village paths, and a way of life shaped by the mountains. From here, sweeping views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre dominate the skyline. The local culture, customs, and warm hospitality of the Gurung people add depth to the experience.
Leaving Ghandruk, the trail ascends through dense forest toward Tadapani at 2,630 meters, followed by a gradual climb to Ghorepani at 2,860 meters. This section is rich in rhododendron and oak forest and is especially scenic during spring. Ghorepani serves as the base for the early morning hike to Poon Hill.
The ascent to Poon Hill before sunrise is the defining moment of the trek. From the summit, trekkers enjoy a wide Himalayan panorama that includes Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu seen together in a single view. As the sun rises, the peaks light up in soft gold, making the climb well worth the early start.
After Poon Hill, the route descends toward Sikha and continues to Tatopani. Located beside the Kali Gandaki River, Tatopani is famous for its natural hot springs. The name literally means “hot water” in Nepali, and a soak in the spring is believed by locals to help relieve joint and skin ailments. This stop provides a relaxing break after several days of walking.
The trek concludes with a drive from Tatopani back to Pokhara, followed by a return journey to Kathmandu, bringing the Annapurna foothills experience to a comfortable close.
With Ticino Treks, this route is carefully planned to balance scenery, culture, and rest. It is an excellent choice for trekkers who want more than a viewpoint, combining village life, forest trails, mountain panoramas, and natural wellness into one rewarding journey.
